But another big event on Memorial Day, the Shinnyo Latern Floating Hawaii, recognizes not only veterans who died but everyone who has passed. "It is a federal holiday to honor our fallen and when you honor anybody else, that is not honoring our fallen," said Pete Tingstrom. Tingstrom is a retired special forces soldier that now has a new mission: move the lantern floating festival from Memorial Day.

"This beautiful ceremony needs to be on Memorial Day weekend but not on Memorial Day," added Tingstrom. He says he a fan and supporter of the lantern floating festival. But adds his efforts to have Shinnyo-In move the event to a different day have not been successful. So now he plans to file a permit to hold a military event on Memorial Day in 2025....at the exact same spot: Magic Island. That would force the lantern floating festival to change its day.

People sacrificed their lives to give us these freedoms, to be able to go to the beach. 2024年06月03日08時42分 リハビリを兼ねて、久しぶりに阪急電車に乗って芦屋川まで出掛けてみた。 駅の階段はさすがに辛い。速攻でエレベーター使用。 十三駅で若菜そばのきつねそば(たぬき)食べましたが、値段がもの凄く上がってるんですね。ここでも浦島状態です。 駅ナカの喜八洲でみたらし団子買おうとしたら、家内が酒饅頭を選択。まぁ、いいか。 今日は雨模様、末梢血管が弱っているのか、むくみと血行不良で手が氷のように冷たい。酒饅頭で温めながら帰宅。体脂肪が殆どないため普通の人より寒さが応えます。帰宅後速攻でお風呂でゆっくり温め直しました。 本日3,494歩、2.47km

HONOLULU (Island News) -- This could be the last year of the Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaii on Memorial Day if some veterans get their way. Memorial Day is a time to honor U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. That sacrifice was honored at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl, during the 73rd Mayor's Memorial Day ceremony. "FDR wrote that in war, great power requires great responsibility. The sacrifice that Memorial Day represents should serve as a beacon of that responsibility, guiding us to a world worthy of the heros we honor today," said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi. There were military honors, wreaths laid in recognition of Hawaii's servicemen and women, along with stories of sacrifice.
